Prior to COVID-19, we ran around in fast forward. Little time for so many of the things that matter. Maybe itās exercising. Or sleeping well. Any kind of self-care and reflection. Reading, writing, talking. Real talking. š¤
At times we feel in crisis. Struggling -- with our past, present, and ultimately, future. š¢ When we have to look inward, we may not always like what we see. The introspection alone, can be crippling. Hence the running around in fast forward. šš½āāļø Keeping busy is a way to, of course, get things done. But it also eliminates the chance to discover what weighs us down, what we are avoiding. What if life is supposed to be better? More beautiful, than this? What if what we want is not what we are living? āš½
I am still reading Untamed by Glennon Doyle. š Deeply empowering, here is a favourite excerpt:
āWeāre like snow globes: We spend all of our time, energy, words, and money creating a flurry, trying not to know, making sure that the snow doesnāt settle so we never have to face the fiery truth inside usāsolid and unmoving.
The relationship is over. The wine is winning. The pills arenāt for back pain anymore. Heās never coming back. That book wonāt write itself. The move is the only way. Quitting this job will save my life. It is abuse. You never grieved him. Itās been six months since we made love. Spending a lifetime hating her is no life at all.
We keep ourselves shaken up because there are dragons in our centre.ā š
And now, with the slowdown, what if we begin to face those ādragonsā? Maybe itās work, or school, or a relationship. Maybe itās past trauma. Addiction. A life of forever dieting. The inability to sustain a romantic relationship. Trouble with intimacy. Or how we are raising our kids. Or that we donāt have kids. How long can the dragons be ignored? How long can we hold that snow globe, and keep shaking it? š®
Life was never supposed to be easy. Itās a tangled web of honesty, mystery, and growth. When we can take a pause, and IMAGINE what we want, can we then find ways to get closer to it?
Put the snow globe down, let the dust settle. And. Just. Be. Still.
Maybe look at what is hard. Important things are.āš½Finishing that report. Saving that money. Schooling those kids. Having that talk. Not having that talk. Facing that family member. Saving the marriage. Ending the marriage. What if we choose hard? š¤·š»āāļø Isnāt that where the magic happens? š« Unscrambling the scramble, we iron out one squiggle at a time. Distracting from reflection is not always the best choice. Many people have been crippled because of it. But holding, and shaking the snow globe, not only covers everything up, itās damn tiring.
Once we let go, and look, we can maybe uncover and claim what we are missing, making changes in whatever parts of our lives that are lacking. These are our own rules. Mine. Yours. Ours. š
Ultimately we all seek the same thing, just in different forms. š«
